Haiti Block Challenge

September 26 2014

“I was nominated by my friend Hannah to take the OMS Haiti Block Challenge. She challenged me to either sponsor a $12 block for a house for the poorest of the poor in Bon Repos, Haiti, or to put my hands and feet where my money is going and actually help build a house with One Mission Society.”

After the January 2010 earthquake, One Mission Society quickly began funding and building homes to help people in our OMS-related churches in southern Haiti. We were blessed to build 54 homes for people who already owned property. Now, we are working on building a community of 35 homes in Bon Repos for the poorest of the poor families. This project includes building 35 houses, a church/school, water wells, and a playground for church families who do not have, and cannot afford, property to build on. This is where we need your help.

h4h bon repost on roof 6-14Perhaps you have heard of the success of the recent ALS ice bucket challenge, which raised more than $60 million. Well, OMS has developed the Haiti Block Challenge to raise awareness, prayer support, and money for new homes being built for earthquake victims in Haiti, and/r to encourage people to participate on a short-term mission trip to Haiti. Help us generate some buzz for a great cause. We challenge YOU to take the OMS Haiti Block Challenge and encourage you to now challenge your friends to participate as well.

Would you be willing to:

  1. Take the challenge by donating $12 (or more) per block to help build a home in Haiti or participate on a short-term trip to build a home with an OMS work team … or both!
  2. Creatively show the number of blocks you are personally sponsoring in your video. You can use bricks, blocks, cardboard boxes, or Legos … however you want to creatively show your donation.
  3. Like us on Facebook and then tag OMS in any Haiti Block Challenge video you create and use #HaitiBlockChallenge. In the coming days, we will be posting some challenges.
  4. Challenge at least 3 friends by name to take the OMS Haiti Block Challenge.

If you want the video script in its entirety (the first paragraph above is a portion of the script), please email: info@onemissionsociety.org and put OMS HBC video script in the subject line.

Click here to donate directly to the challenge and read more details about how the money will be used. You can also send a donation to One Mission Society *PO Box 1648 * Monument, CO 80132-1648 for project #408063-14G910.

Teens Share the Gospel in Colombia, Part 2

September 17 2014

Here's part 2 of the Carlson kids' testimonies. Micah, an OMS missionary kid (MK), shares his story of their short-term trip to Colombia to share the Gospel.

I don’t like evangelism because it makes me nervous. It’s not so much a fear of sharing my faith, but of not wanting to knock on the door. It’s so much easier with three people (me, the interpreter, and a local church member) because you only have to worry about a third of it!

What impacted me most was how much fun it was with four other teenage guys on the team. It was a privilege for all of us to be able to share Jesus with others, especially alongside our dads.

The Colombian ministry team prays for weeks, but Sunday we joined them to prayer walk on a hill that overlooks the city of Medellin. We prayed, “God would you open the heavens, open doors, open hands and open hearts?” He did. Mine as well.

One door God opened was with a little 12 year-old girl, her mom, and her very old grandpa who sat slumped in a wheelchair. The crumbling house was crowded as we squished into their tiny living room. I recounted a story of God’s provision for something he knew I needed once: a bicycle when mine was stolen. The Colombian family listened and nodded. After hearing the plan of salvation, they all wanted to accept Jesus! We had the privilege of giving them a gift, just like the bicycle God had provided for me. This gift was Jesus, someone God knew they needed.

Our second day in the neighborhood, 106 people came to Christ. The pastor expressed his gratitude with emotion, “Thank you for coming. We've been praying for this.” I was asked to pray in Spanish to thank the Lord for the fruitfulness that day. Many were in tears because they had never had so many people come to Christ.

I would tell my Christian friends that participating on an evangelism team is a good experience. Everyone should do it at least once. It’s good for faith. You have to trust God the whole week. It’s what God wants you to do.

Teens Share Faith in Colombia

September 17 2014

Enjoy this ministry report from OMS missionary kid (MK) Maddy Carlson. She, her brother Micah, dad Greg, and 7 others on the team shared the Gospel on a short-term evangelism trip to Colombia in July with One Mission Society. Hopefully this will inspire you to KNOW you too can share your faith with others as these teens did.

Colombia Report from Maddy

As we walked along the streets of Medellin, Colombia, in July, I saw some people sleeping on the sidewalk. I knew that when Jesus looked into the hearts of people, he had compassion on them. When I looked at them, all I could do was pray, "God, make their lives alright and change them."

I walked with an interpreter and someone from the local church, knocking on doors. Every day, we visited a different community. The Colombians had already been praying and fasting over their communities a long time before we arrived. As visitors, my teammates and I shared our testimony and presented the Gospel using the Evangecube. The local church member took note of who prayed to receive Christ. As each day concluded, we presented the names of the new believers as a gift to the local house church to disciple. In four days, through six teenagers and four dads, 335 prayed to receive Christ!

Maddy evangelizing
He never opened the gate, but it did not

stop him from opening his heart to Christ.

I was nervous the first day we began to walk the rough streets of Medellin. I saw an elderly gentleman sweeping his stairs and asked if we could get his attention. As I shared, he continued to sweep, so I thought, "He doesn't care about what we're saying." However, when I began to present the Gospel, he became very interested. Even though a security gate stood between us, he listened. He never opened the gate, but it did not stop him from opening his heart to Christ. He was the first person I had ever led to Christ!

I described my Colombian ministry trip to a youth leader after I returned home. "I don't think I could ever do that," she said to me. I heard myself tell her, "Really, it's not hard or scary because you know that God is watching over you. You have people with you and other people praying for you. Anyone can tell people about God. You just have to have faith."

Teach Me to Pray!

September 4 2014

I am not sure I know how to pray. Not the way Charles Cowman, the founder of One Mission Society, prayed. In his biography Missionary Warrior, Lettie Cowman writes of Charles, “The [mission] hall became so crowded that we prayed for larger quarters. On April 21, a poor woman sent a gift of five dollars, quoting Isaiah 54:2, ‘Enlarge the place of thy tent.’ It sent Charles to his knees, and he immediately claimed from God a larger building. In May, $1,000 came from a stranger who had felt the Lord leading him to make a gift to the Mission. It came just in time to purchase a splendid mission hall … Every dollar needed for its purchase was received.” Wow!

What did Charles say to God? Was it his words? His faith? A mixture of both? I think if I had received $5 from someone, praying about it would not have been my first response, yet, it was for Charles Cowman. Why?

Reading missionary biographies causes me to question my own prayer life. I know Jesus gave the disciples (and us) the Lord’s Prayer. Yet, I know something is different from the way I pray and the way Jesus prays, as I read in Scripture. My prayers sound so empty, unless I am in a serious state of struggle or pain. What about the rest of the days? The ones that are just “same old, same old.” What is missing?

I am not looking for a formula or a “magical wording” because I do not think that is the issue. I am missing some connection with the Lord that Charles Cowman possessed, as well as other spiritual giants like Hudson Taylor, Corrie Ten Boom, and Billy Graham. After some soul searching, I must admit, it is the intimacy of my prayers, or rather, the lack of intimacy. Lord, teach me to pray like that!

Therefore, I am so excited about the One Mission Society Prayer Summit coming up September 29 – October 1. The cry of my heart is to know how to communicate with my Father in heaven like Jesus did in the upper room and how the founder of OMS did back in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

God has not changed since the dawn of time. How then should I enter into the presence of Almighty God? I am determined to find out at the OMS Prayer Summit. If you want a deeper, more meaningful prayer life, please go to prayersummit.onemissionsociety.org. Click the link to find more information and to register for the summit.
