Save the Date! OMS Prayer Summit 2014

August 27 2014

“Lord, teach us to pray,” requested one of Jesus’ disciples. The disciple thought he knew how to pray, for he had grown up reciting the Shema three times a day. However, as he privately watched Jesus pray, he saw something he had never known personally during prayer. Jesus spoke his words as if his prayer was personal, vibrant, and alive, not the rote recitations he had practiced all his life. And he wanted some of that. So Jesus gathered his disciples and taught them to pray.

Is this the cry of your heart, as well? Do you long to experience revival, a deeper presence of God, in prayer, in life, and in ministry to reach a lost world? It is my cry as well.

I echo Paul’s words to the church at Rome that we … I … don’t know how to pray and are utterly dependent on the Holy Spirit in this. Just as Jesus taught his disciples to pray when he walked the earth, he taught them again in the Upper Room after his resurrection. Thankfully, Jesus still teaches his followers.

You will not want to miss this opportunity to come together for an OMS Prayer Summit facilitated by Jon Mitchell and Don Young from the Leadership Team of the College of Prayer International . The College of Prayer International mentors, trains, and equips Christian pastors and leaders who will reach a lost world through a revived church. OMS’ own Dr. Wesley Duewel has taught at several College of Prayer events.

Our sessions will include:

  • The Flame -The Manifest Presence of God
  • Flameholders - Carrying the Manifest Presence
  • Ministering to the Lord - Our Highest Calling
  • Putting on the Armor - Getting Dressed for War
  • Convergence of Calling - Marriages that Advance Together
  • The Lord’s Prayer Pattern: Relationship - Forgiven Forgivers

Over three days, we will be sharing worship, teaching, and prayer as we seek to exalt Jesus Christ, hear from him, and respond to him. Registration will begin at 5:00 p.m. on September 29 with dinner at 5:30. Our evening session will last from 6:30 to 9:00. Tuesday, we will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. with meals and breaks. Our time together will conclude with our OMS Prayer Rally on October 1 with lunch to follow. The $39 registration (plus processing fee) covers materials and meals.

Flooding in South Asia

August 20 2014

Important News from Our Partners in South Asia

A devastating flood has hit the northern region of South Asia. Increased flooding, due to heavy rainfall, continues. Already, more than two million people are homeless …many marooned, having lost all they own. Many thousands more are in need of food.

One Mission Society desires to come alongside our ministry partners there to help these flood victims survive this dire situation. We currently have 324 OMS-related churches with 12,000+ people in serious danger. We want to extend relief to at least 1,000 affected families through donations of food, clothing, and medicinal supplies.

You can help provide for one family with a gift of $45.00, which covers the cost of: a 20 kilogram (kg) bag of rice, a 2 kg bag of lentils, a 1 kg bag of flour, a 2 kg bag of salt, a 1 kg block of jiggery (unrefined sugar), 1 saree (for women), 1 lungi (for men), and basic medications, as needed. Our ministry team in South Asia is ready to purchase and distribute these life-saving necessities in the name of Jesus.

Your prayers and generous giving will save thousands of lives.

To donate to the South Asia flood relief project #403300-148102, mail a check today to: One Mission Society * PO Box 1648 * Monument, CO 80132-1648, or give now through our secure website. Just include the project number … and a prayer that your donation will touch many lives.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration. Any amount will help the thousands suffering.

Change of Plans: Reflections from an OMS Summer Intern

August 14 2014

Four years ago, I made a conscious decision to attend a secular university. After looking at a few different schools, God made it obvious that Ball State University was where he wanted me. For journalism news majors, like myself, at Ball State, it is pretty much assumed that every student’s dream is to work for CNN or the New York Times. If national news isn’t the dream, local news better be the top priority.

So, when I told my professor that I was going to intern at a Christian mission organization, she was less than thrilled. In fact, I was told to rethink my life. I was shocked and angry, but little did she (or I!) know, that was exactly what I was going to do throughout my internship with One Mission Society.

From the first day of my internship when the Communications Department started singing songs from the “Frozen” soundtrack, I realized that those who work at OMS aren’t employees or coworkers … they’re a family. The people who walk the halls of OMS headquarters included me in their family. Though I was only there for 10 weeks, so many people went out of their way to ask about my life. I wasn’t just known about … I was known. It made me realize that this is the kind of place where I will want to work, and I want to thank OMS for treating me less like an intern and more like Christina.

I realized quickly that the atmosphere that I loved every day was possible because God is central in everything. Everything wasn’t always perfect or easy, but I found a lot of joy knowing that my work helped further the kingdom of God. That being said, the need for prayer became so much more evident to me this summer. I grew up in a Christian home and continue to attended church every Sunday, but prayer was never a regular part of my life. This summer, I saw the power of prayer through the people of OMS. I saw the relationships they have with Jesus, and I began to think about the impact that prayer could and should be having on my own life.

Sometime during the first week of my internship, I actually said the sentence “I’ve never felt called to go overseas.” I never thought that I had a reason to go overseas. I’m not a teacher, and I certainly don’t have seminary experience. My theological knowledge, compared to what I thought missionaries should have, is lacking. However, throughout my internship, I was reminded that God doesn’t ask all of us to attend seminary and learn how to read the Bible in different languages, but he does ask us to use the talents he has given us according to his will. Now, 11 weeks after that first week of my internship, I am planning a trip this winter to Hungary to work with the OMS team there and to help them with some communication needs.

I’m sure that this is not at all what my professor had in mind when she told me to rethink my life, but as I look back on the past 11 weeks, I’m realizing that this is exactly what God had in mind.
