Missionary Spotlight: The Almeida's

The Almeida Family“Follow me” were the words native Brazilians Paulo, a successful businessman, and Fernanda Almeida, a psychologist, heard from God when they were called to serve the Lord. After contacting One Mission Society’s Mobilization Department, Paulo sold his company so that the Almeida family could serve the Lord in Mozambique.

February 26, 2012, is a day the Almeidas will never forget. It was the date of their commissioning service as missionaries with OMS. At the commissioning service, more than 500 people attended as pastors and friends laid their hands on the Almeidas to pray for them and welcome them into their new roles. Tears flowed from the altar that night as the Almeidas poured themselves out as an offering to the Lord.

Now living in Mozambique, the Almeidas are involved intentional evangelic ministries. On Easter, the Almeidas set up a Jesus Film showing. They went door to door, asking members of the community to join them in watching the film. Overall, the evening was a success. Paulo states,” This time the ‘vision of the field’ was a beautiful full moon night with many people coming to know Jesus as the Savior who gave His life because of His great love for us.”

Paulo and Fernanda were more than ready to follow God. What they did not realize is how much their daughters, Laura and Luana, would also be serving God in Mozambique. Behind the Almeida’s home in Mozambique is a large field. It is used for parking during the day, but at night, this field caught the girls’ attention as a good place to play football (soccer).

John 12:26 states, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me” (NIV).

As Laura and Luana began to play soccer, they saw three or four children in the distance slowly inching their way closer to the field. The girls waved them over to come and play. By the next evening, the girls returned to the same spot, but this time, there were 10 children.

Now, after every game the children pray to God, thanking Him for the fun time. As of today, 20 children regularly meet in the evenings to play soccer. Paulo speaks about his daughter’s ministry, “They (Laura and Luana) have taken this opportunity to speak of Jesus’ love for these children.”

Together the Almeidas are serving in Mozambique and sharing the love of Jesus. 1 Peter 1:12 states, “It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things” (NIV). Sharing the love of Christ is a beautiful thing, even angels long to look at that!

Please continue to pray for the Almeidas, serving in Mozambique. You can also follow their journey by reading their blog.
