David and Conce Roof

David and Conce Roof have served with One Mission Society since March of 2000. During their first term (2000–2006), they worked in Londrina, Brazil, in various capacities, including camp directors at Camp Shalom, language teachers at the Londrina Bible Institute and church planting at the Jardim Veneza Missionary Church.

Today, the Roofs use their experience gained in Londrina in a pioneering work for OMS and the Missionary Church (the OMS-related Brazilian denomination) in the northern region of Brazil. They live in Belem, at the mouth of the Amazon River, where they are planting churches. First fruits of the work were born when the Icoaraci-Belem Missionary Church was officially affiliated with the denomination in December 2008. It is the denomination’s first church plant in this vast region of the country.

David is the co-pastor of the church. On a rotating schedule with the senior pastor, he routinely preaches in services and teaches Sunday school. He also coordinates the Christian education courses of the church. His background in construction as a carpenter is being used for coordinating the construction of the new church building being built by volunteer teams and church members. Conce helps lead the women’s ministry of the church. They meet on a regular basis for crafts, Bible study and prayer. She also is the graceful hostess to the many colleagues, seminary students and teams that come through to contribute to the work.

Belem is familiar territory for the Roofs. Conce and David met while they were both in ministry with Teen Missions International in Belem during the late 1980s. In 1991, they were married in Belem and continued in ministry with Teen Missions through February of 1992. During this time, they coordinated several Brazilian and American evangelistic and work teams engaged in various projects. These teams included their direct involvement in a ministry showing evangelical films in the interior villages surrounding Belem. God used this time to lay foundations in their hearts for the work they are doing today.

David received his associate’s degree from Lincoln Technical Institute in electronics in 1987. He also holds a diploma in Bible and missions from Bible Missionary and Work-Training Center in Merritt Island, Florida. Conce earned a diploma in theology from Instituto Biblico Grace in Belem Para, Brazil, in 1988. She also taught elementary school for nine years.

The Roofs’ son, Andrew, was born in 1995. He’s fluent in both Portuguese and English. His favorite pastime is developing his musical talents, articulated most recently in playing the guitar. He is a great asset to the ministry, playing in various church services and activities throughout the week. He also loves playing soccer. He has played on teams in both Brazil and the United States.
