Dick and Judy Amos

Dick and Judy Amos served as missionaries to Japan with One Mission Society for 41 years. They have assisted Japanese pastors in planting new churches and have helped strengthen existing churches through preaching and teaching.

In a country where less than .5% of the people are Christian, churches are eager for assistance in making new contacts. The Amoses taught English conversation, English Bible and American cooking in local churches to attract Japanese who would not otherwise enter a church. Following each class, a Japanese pastor or lay Christian would give a clear presentation of the gospel. About 85% of the class members are unchurched, but over a period of time, a number became Christians through these contacts. Dick preached in churches where classes were held in order to draw class members into the church. For many years, the Amoses also organized English camps and coordinated the ministry of short term and summer missionaries.

Though they retired from full-time career service to Japan in 2005, the Amoses continue ministry with OMS in Japan by making periodic ministry trips to Japan and hosting Japanese pastors and former class members at their home near OMS World Headquarters in Indiana. Their primary goal on these trips is to renew contact with churches where they had a regular preaching or English teaching ministry and to strengthen ties between the churches and non-Christians ministered to in the past. Over the past year, they visited with more than 100 former class members, many of whom attended services where the Amoses preached or shared their testimonies while they were in Japan.

Judy has written 22 English conversation and English Bible study books, which are used by mission groups across Japan and in other countries, and she has led seminars on teaching English as an evangelistic outreach. A daughter of OMS missionaries to Colombia, she has been involved in missionary children’s education as a Spanish teacher and as a school board member of Christian Academy in Japan.

Dick holds a B.A. from Asbury College and an M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary. Prior to his assignment as a career missionary, he worked as a short-term missionary to Japan from 1958 to 1961 with Every Community for Christ, the worldwide evangelistic church planting ministry of OMS. Judy holds a B.A. from Asbury College and an M.Ed. from Azusa Pacific University
