The journey described in this book began in the old city of Peking, during the days of Chiang Kai Shek and later the Japanese occupation. The road leads to India, in the last throes of the British Raj, caught in the turmoil in World War II while struggling for its independence. The scenes shift to college and romance in America of the fifties, then on to the Hong Kong of the 1960s, a city of two million refugees toiling to survive in the human cauldron of that British colony. From Hong Kong the journey leads to Indonesia, land of islands and volcanoes, where time is measured by the call of the mosque. Then the scenes broaden to include travels throughout Asia, Europe and Latin America. But above all, this is a journey of the heart, not so much geographical as spiritual. And its destination has always been LIFE.
